Definition (based on language teaching)

“This application's main characteristic is the creation of presentations that teachers use as support in their classes, allowing the design of other types of didactic materials.” (Villaescusa, 2022).

Reasons for use in Language Teaching

PowerPoint is a versatile tool that can be used virtually anywhere, offering numerous benefits. Firstly, presentations created in PowerPoint can be shown unlimited times, allowing for repeated viewings and easy sharing with others. Additionally, the flexibility of PowerPoint enables presentations to be delivered at any desired location, making it a convenient option. Moreover, PowerPoint facilitates effective communication with the audience by adapting to various learning styles. Presenters can tailor their content to accommodate different types of learners, whether through the use of text, videos, or images. This adaptability ensures that the message is effectively conveyed to the audience. Furthermore, PowerPoint's emphasis on multimedia, particularly images and videos, plays a crucial role in enhancing presentations. The software provides a wide range of multimedia formats, which serve as powerful tools for engaging and assisting learners in understanding the content. By utilizing these different formats, presenters can maximize the benefits of PowerPoint and create impactful presentations.

The University of Washington provides valuable tips on how PowerPoint can be effectively incorporated into language classrooms. Firstly, illustrated lectures can be enhanced by incorporating images to visually support the content and emphasize key points, as well as to introduce new units in an engaging manner. Secondly, PowerPoint is useful for presenting instructions for in-class activities, allowing teachers to provide clear and visually appealing guidance to their students. Additionally, PowerPoint can be utilized to display test or quiz questions, fostering class discussions and encouraging student participation by projecting their responses. Finally, PowerPoint offers opportunities for interactive learning through games such as tic-tac-toe, quiz games, and Jeopardy, which can be created and played directly within the software. These strategies highlight the versatility of PowerPoint as a tool for enhancing language learning experiences in the classroom.
